This blog was created by a group of parents of HVRHS students to explain why we vehemently object to the modified 4×4 schedule being implemented at Housy this coming fall.  We hope to enlist your support in our efforts to stop this plan.  For starters, click on the links at the top to see what block scheduling is and why it’s so much worse than the existing schedule. Then watch for updates.  Thank you for your time.

The high school in my town of Dover Plains, NY went to a block schedule in the late 90’s. They tried it for many years and it did not work for them. They went back to the usual 45 min classes and funny enough they are now looking to implement a schedule like ours where a long block is rotating classes throughout the week. This seems ideal to me.

Block scheduling has not been proven to improve academic success at all. Why disrupt everything and why are we in such a rush to do it? Maybe we should look at having teachers available to help our students when they are in the Learning Lab? I can’t believe they are not now.

With block scheduling you are also faced with the problem of having long gaps in between subjects you are taking. This is a huge problem when you are taking the SATs and ACTs in 11th and 12th grade. You feasibly can finish all your Math requirements by the end of 10th grade and then be tested on it a year or two afterwards!

We need to Stop the Block!
